PREDECESSORS AND
SHORT HISTORY: Sivaganga, along with Pudukottai, was
originally part of the Kingdom of Ramnad. Kilavan Sethupati, the 7th
Raja of Ramnad 1674/1710, established the Nalcottal (Nalukottai)
palayam (later Sivaganga) and appointed Periya Udaya Thevar as
Governor. Between 1783 and 1801, the Maruthu brothers administered the
estate, constructing many notable temples, Uranis and Tanks. Estate

Vijaya Regunatha Sasivarna Thevar, 1st Zamindar of
Nalukottai 1728/1749 or 1730/1750, he was given a portion of land
sufficient to maintain 1000 armed men by the Raja of Ramnad who placed
him in charge of the fortresses of Piranmalai, Tiruppathur, Sholapuram
and Tiruppuvanam as well as the harbour of Thondi; married Rani
Akilandeswari Nachiyar, daughter of Raja Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi,
8th Raja of Ramnad.
