ESTATES WITHIN BIKANER PRINCELY STATE

The western and northern portions of the State were held at the arrival of the Rathores by Bhatis, who had wrested them in former times from the Parmars or Ponwars. These older families are all extinct. One of the first acts of Rao Bikaji was to secure the neutrality of the Bhatis by marrying the daughter of their leading chief, Rao Sheikha of Pungal. The Bhatis were subsequently stripped of a great portion of their possessions, including the stronghold of Bhatner. The herditary nobles are distinguished among themselves by their respective positions in Darbar and by the kind of Tazim they enjoy. Succession among the Tazimi Pattedars is by primogeniture, and though in some branches partition used to take place, this is no longer the case. As a rule a grant of villages or of land for cultivation is made to the younger sons. Some villages are exempt from payment of revenue, while the rest pay revenue, which varies in amount in different estate but is generally about one third of the income. Pattedars on succeeding to their estates pay one years worth of revenue as nazrana to the state. They also pay neota on a change of in the Ruler as well as various other charges. In return, they receive from his HH the Maharaja, gifts (raj bakhshish) when marriage and funerals take place in their own families.
Below is a list of the nobles of Bikaner. The first four are the Sirayat so titled for their position in the Darbar in relation to the Maharaja.

UPDATE (1931): The nobles of Bikaner are divided into four divisions or grades, as follows:-
(a), descendants of families which were in Bikaner before the Rathore invasion in 1465, they are mainly Bhatis, the Rao of Pungal, being the most prominent.
(b), descendants of the founder of Bikaner, or his uncle or his brother, namely the Bikawats, Kandhalots and Bidawats.
(c), descendants of later Rulers.
(d), descendants of persons related by marriage to the ruler and who are known as prasangis and hold about thirty villages.
A - Founded by Rao Bida, one of the three original founders of the State of Bikaner; the retainer figures include other Bida Kothris which comprise around 140 families in total. Bidasar was made khalsa in 1905 for three years
B - The Kandhalot estates were wrested for refusal to submit and pay tribute with the help of the British forces after a series of battles starting in the 1810s� and ending in the 1850s� with a few villages provided for maintenance.
C - The figures include Bidasar and the other Bida Kothris which comprise around 140 families in total.
