- Abanindranath Tagore, born 7th August 1871 at
Jorasanko, Painter and man of letters, educated at Normal School in
1876 and later in Sanskrit College, became principal of the Art College
of Kolkata in 1898 and continued to teach there before joining the
University of Calcutta as Bageshri professor in in 1921, Chancellor of
the Visva-Bharati University from 1942. He was the principal
artist of the Bengal school and the first major exponent of swadeshi
values in Indian art. He sought to modernize Moghul and Rajput styles
in order to counter the influence of Western models of art, as taught
in Art Schools under the British Raj. Such was the success of his work
that it was eventually accepted and promoted as a national Indian style
within British art institutions; married 1889, Suhasini Devi
Chatterjee, daughter of Bhujagendra Bhusan Chatterjee, and had issue.
He died 5th
December 1951 at Kolkata.

31st
October 1851, married Sarada Devi, born 1821, died 1875, and had issue,
fifteen children. He died 19th January 1905 at Calcutta.

- Dinendranath Tagore, born 1882, a Bengali musician
and noted singer, he served as principal of Visva-Bharati's Music
school, Sangit Bhavana in its opening years. He was also involved with
a number of dance dramas, including a tour performing Taser Desh
to Bombay in 1933. He also composed the music for the film Natir
Puja in 1932. He died 1935.

- Sudhendranath Tagore, born 1869,
a talented author, he wrote poems, novels and short stories; he
introduced a new literary magazine, Sadhana in 1891 and was its

- Soumyendranath Tagore, born October
1901, educated at Mitra Institution
matriculating in 1917, and went on to do his Honours in Economics from
Presidency College. In 1927 he formed the Revolutionary Communist Party
of India. He died 22nd September 1974.

- Satyendranath Tagore, born 1st June 1842 in Calcutta, he
passed the Entrance examination in
the first division from Hindu School in 1857 and entered Presidency
College,
In 1862 he went to London along with his wife and returned home in 1864
as an ICS officer. He began his career as a civil servant in 1865 as
assistant
magistrate and collector in Ahmedabad. He spent the major part of his
professional
career in western India (former Bombay province) and retired as
sessions
judge of Satara district, He was made president of vangiya sahitya
parishad
(Bengal Literary Council) in 1900 and 1901; married 1859, Janadanandini
Devi, born 1850, died 1941, daughter of Abhaya Charan Roy, privately
educated,
fluent
in Bangla, English, Gujrati, Marathi and to some extent French, Member
of the Sakhi Samiti, in the village of Dakshindihi
in
the district of Jessore, now in Bangladesh and had issue. He died 9th
January 1923.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Four Chapters into English and produced a
condensed version of the main portion of Mahabharata in
Bengali; married Sangya Devi, and had issue. He died 1940.
- Subirendranath Tagore, married Purnima Devi, and had

- Supriyo Tagore, a well-known Brahmo preacher and
one of the longest serving principals of the Vishwa Bharati University
School in Santiniketan. He also taught at both the Doon School, Dehra
Dun and Lawrence School, Sanawar.
- Indira Devi, born 29th December 1873
at Bijapur in South India,
educated
at Auckland House in Simla and Loretta House in Calcutta, she passed
the
Entrance examination in 1887 and then the FA. She won the Padmavati
gold
medal, standing first among women in the BA examination of Calcutta
University
in 1892. She obtained her diploma in music from the Trinity College of
Music. She served as president of a number of women's welfare
organisations
such as the Bengal Women's Education League, All India Women
Conference,
Hiranmayi Vidhava Ashram. In 1956 she became Vice-Chancellor of
Visva-Bharati
University. She was awarded the Bhuvanmohini gold medal by Calcutta
University
in 1944, the Deshikottam by Visva-Bharati University in 1957 and the
first
Rabindra Award by the Rabindra Bharati Samiti in 1959. She married
1891,
Pramatha Chowdhury, born 7th August 1868 in Jessore, died 2nd September
1946, son of Durgadas
Chowdhury,
Zamindar of Pabna, Rajshahi Dist., and had issue. She died on 12th
August 1960.

Rani Chaudhuri, born 30th March 1908, at Waltair, Madras, completed her
schooling
in the early 1920's, educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and
the Royal Academy of Music in London. She won scholarships at both

institutions. She also took a degree in architecture, did a stint with
Elizabeth Arden in the art of make-up and after due specialization,
worked
as a textile designer at a well-known art studio, awarded the "Padma
Shri"
in 1958 and in 1970, she became the first recipient of the prestigious
"Dadasaheb Phalke Award", she married 1stly, 1929, Himansu Rai,
graduated
with
a degree in Law, died May 1940, married 2ndly, 1945, Svetoslav Roerich,
the famous Russian painter, died 9th January 1993. She died sp
9th
March 1994 in Bangalore, and was honoured with a full State funeral.

Rakhaldas Haldar,
and his wife, Kiran Kumari, and had issue. She died 13th March 1923 in
Ranchi.

- Shrimati Swarnakumari Devi Tagore, born 28th August 1855,
author and editor
of the well
known
literary monthly Bharati for 30 years, helped form the Sakhi
Samiti, an organisation to help widows and destitute women. In 1889
and 1890 she took part in the annual sessions of the indian national
congress.
She was one of the first two members elected from Bengal to represent
that
state at the session. In 1927 she was awarded the Jagattarini gold
medal
by the University of Calcutta and in 1929 she became the president of
the Bangiya
Sahitya Sammelan; married 1868, Janakinath Ghosal, Zamindar of
Belgaum,
and had issue. She died 3rd July 1932.

trans., 1912). He was also knighted in 1915, but returned the honour in
1919 in protest against the brutal police firing by the British
authorities
in Jallianwala Bagh, Punjab; took to painting at the age of 70, he
produced
over 3,000 pictures within a decade; married 9th December 1883,
